Group Term Life Summary

 

Up to $1,000,000 of life insurance coverage is available to most Texas Bar members through the State Bar of Texas Insurance Trust. Full-time employees (30 hours or more per week) of law firms domiciled in Texas are also eligible to participate in the life insurance plans through the Trust, however, the maximum benefit amount for employees is limited to $100,000 and may not exceed 4 times their annual earnings. Insured members and employees can also cover their eligible dependents under the life plans. Eligible dependents include the spouse, unmarried children at least 14 days of age, but less than 25 years of age.

 

Coverage amounts under the Member Life Plan for Texas Bar Members are in increments of $100,000.

 

Coverage amounts under the Employee Life Plan are in increments of $10,000. You may select amounts for your eligible dependents as follows

Spouse - A multiple of $10,000 – maximum $250,000

Each child – A multiple of $2,000 – maximum $10,000
   (each child must be covered for the same benefit amount.)

 

The amount of insurance for a dependent may not exceed 50% of your amount of insurance.

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY

  • Member Life Plan - All members of the State Bar of Texas.
  • Employer Life Plan - All full-time employees (30 hours or more per week) of an "Eligible Employer Unit." An "Eligible Employer Unit" is a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation engaged primarily in the practice of law with at least one full-time employee who is not a member of the State Bar of Texas.
  • Eligible Dependents - Spouse and unmarried children at least 14 days old and less than 25 years of age.  Children include legally adopted children, step-children and foster children who depend on the attorney/employee for support and maintenance. Children also include grandchildren if they are considered dependents for federal income tax purposes.
HOW TO ENROLL

You may request more complete information by using our online request form or download an enrollment form (pdf format). All applicants will need to complete a Prudential Application Form, including the reverse side of the Health Statement (Part C) if requesting coverage on dependents. Approval process takes approximately 30 days, depending upon additional information requested by Prudential. Return the completed form to:

After you enroll, you will be issued a Group Insurance Certificate describing your coverage in greater detail. The complete terms of the coverage will be governed by the group insurance contract issued to the State Bar of Texas Insurance Trust by the carrier.
